From Busan to Anxi – Strengthening Tangible and Intangible Heritage Synergies

From 9 to 15 August 2026, the Capacity-Building Workshop in the Asia-Pacific Region on Tangible–Intangible Synergies in World Heritage Management was held in Anxi, Quanzhou. The area provided a particularly relevant learning environment, bringing together components of “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song–Yuan China”, traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices, and the Anxi Tieguanyin Tea Cultural System.

The workshop brought together 19 participants from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Tajikistan and the United Republic of Tanzania, alongside resource persons from across the Asia-Pacific region. Through lectures, presentations, field studies and collaborative assignments, participants examined the relationships among physical attributes, cultural spaces, traditional knowledge, community stewardship and local livelihoods.

Field visits to Chishi Village, the Xiacaopu iron-smelting site and heritage places in Quanzhou Ancient City allowed participants to apply integrated approaches in different settings. Multidisciplinary groups then assessed existing and missing connections between tangible and intangible heritage and proposed practical strategies, including stronger community participation, improved documentation of living heritage, responsible tourism, support for knowledge transmission and more integrated interpretation.
