Leader of Bangladesh BNP Pledges to Heal Nation
The BNP swept to a decisive two-thirds parliamentary majority in Thursday's voting, claiming 209 of 300 legislative seats—a result that positions Rahman to assume the prime minister's office and form the next government.
In opposition, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition captured 77 seats. Notably absent from the ballot was the Awami League under Sheikh Hasina, whose administration collapsed in 2024 amid mass student demonstrations and a violent government response that resulted in 1,400 deaths. Electoral authorities prohibited the party's participation.
Delivering his inaugural remarks since Thursday's electoral sweep, Rahman acknowledged formidable challenges ahead. "We are taking office at a time when we have to start our journey through a fragile economy, ineffective constitutional institutions, and weak law and order situation left by a fascist regime. However, if the people's strength is with us, no obstacle can stop us," he declared.
On international relations strategy, Rahman rejected alignment with any specific nation, stating future decisions would prioritize "Bangladeshi interests."
The incoming prime minister emphasized cohesion as paramount. "National unity is our strength, division is our weakness," he stressed, appealing for collective purpose. "This victory belongs to democracy, this victory belongs to Bangladesh, this victory belongs to the democracy-loving people of the country. From today, we are free."
Rahman issued a stern warning against lawlessness and oppression. "We will not tolerate any kind of injustice or illegal activities. Regardless of party, opinion, religion, ethnicity, or differing views, we will not accept any attack by the strong against the weak under any pretext," he stated.
