New York Mayor Demands Sweeping Gun Reforms After Manhattan Shooting

(MENAFN) New York Mayor Eric Adams demanded sweeping federal gun reforms on Tuesday following a tragic shooting at a Manhattan office that left four dead and one critically injured.

Speaking with media, Adams emphasized the need for legislative action over symbolic gestures: "The response to shooters of this magnitude, mass shooters, cannot be vigils. It must be legislation."

Providing new insights into Monday’s violent incident, Adams revealed that the shooter targeted the US National Football League headquarters at 345 Park Avenue. The assailant had traveled from Nevada, located in the US Southwest, to carry out the attack.

Regarding the possible motive, Adams pointed to a note referencing a brain disorder, saying, "We're looking at his note that talked about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) ... but it is far from conclusive." Media reports suggest the shooter blamed the league for his degenerative brain disease.

Describing the attacker’s behavior, Adams noted, "When you look at the tapes ... there was just a total disregard for human lives," highlighting the meticulous planning captured on security cameras.

Among those killed was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who leaves behind a wife and two children, with a third child expected. In honor of Islam’s sacrifice, Adams ordered flags at all city buildings to be lowered to half-staff.

President Donald Trump reached out to Adams to convey his sympathies and commended the swift actions of New York police. Trump also expressed condolences on social media, describing the shooter as a "crazed lunatic" and extending his prayers to the victims' families, including the fallen officer. Despite this, Trump and many in his party continue to oppose new gun control measures.

The shooting left a fifth person critically wounded and battling for their life.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas. Surveillance footage showed Tamura wielding an M4 rifle before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Tisch stated that Tamura had a history of mental health struggles, though investigators have yet to determine his exact motivations.
